一、閃兵與逃兵
新聞中常出現的「閃兵」指的是逃避兵役的行為，英文可以用動詞 evade 或 dodge表達，說成 evade military service 或 dodge the draft，而形容此種躲避兵役行為的人，英文中有個特別的用語叫做 draft dodger。
例句：
•Some celebrities use fake medical reports to dodge the draft.
部分名人利用假病歷閃兵。
•Both Bill Clinton and Donald Trump have faced accusations of being draft dodgers.
柯林頓和川普都曾面臨過逃避兵役的指控。
💡英語小教室：你知道「沙漠」的英文 desert也可以用來表示逃兵 (動詞用法，形容人則用 deserter)？不過，要注意它指的是「在軍中擅自離開部隊」的意思，也就是當兵後的逃兵行為，與上面說的閃兵不同喔。

二、服役、入伍與免役
英文中「役男」叫做 conscript，「服役期間」稱為 service term。「服兵役」則可以說成 serve in the military，其中 military可以替換成各種軍種，例如：army, navy, air force等。

我叔叔在海軍服役了十四年。
•The current mandatory military service term in Taiwan is one year.
台灣現在的當兵的役期是一年。
如果想要表達的不是當兵的義務，而是指「入伍」這件事，則有「徵召(induct)」 和「自願從軍(enlist)」(也就是志願役) 兩種說法。在口語中也可以簡單用 join the military / armed forces表示。

•I was inducted into the army at the age of 21.
我 21 歲時被徵召入伍。
• My best friend enlisted as a career soldier after graduating from high school.

「免役」也就是不用服兵役，英文用 exemption 表示，動詞可以用 be / get exempted from military service表示被允許可以不用當兵。

三、兵役制度：徵兵制與募兵制
台灣目前是徵兵制和募兵制兩者並行，「募兵制」的英文可以說成 voluntary military service，強調是自願加入。「徵兵制」正式的說法是 conscription，口語中常說成 draft (也可以當成動詞表示徵召)。向外國人解釋台灣的兵役制度時，可以簡單用mandatory military service表示。
